Sarangan Lake / Telaga Sarangan, Magetan

Sarangan Lake, also known as Telaga Pasir, is a natural lake located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level and is located on the slopes of Mount Lawu, Plaosan District, Magetan Regency, East Java. This lake is about 16 kilometers west of the city of Magetan. This lake is about 30 hectares wide and 28 meters deep. With temperatures between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, Sarangan Lake can attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Sarangan Lake is a mainstay tourist attraction in Magetan Regency. Around the lake there are two star hotels, 43 jasmine class hotels, and 18 tourist huts. In addition to dozens of souvenir shops, visitors can also enjoy the beauty of Sarangan by riding around the lake, or riding a fast boat. Other tourist facilities are available, such as restaurants, playgrounds, tourist markets, parking lots, public telephone facilities, places of worship, and parks.

The existence of 19 restaurants around the lake makes visitors have many alternative menu choices. Likewise the presence of street vendors offering various souvenirs has made it easy for visitors to buy souvenirs. A typical dish sold around the lake is rabbit satay.

Magetan is also helped by the potential of local small industries that are able to produce handicrafts for souvenirs, such as bamboo plaits, leather crafts, shoe crafts, and typical food products such as emping melinjo and plates (puli crackers, namely rice crackers).

Telaga Sarangan also has boat rental and water rickshaw services. There are 51 motorboats and 13 water tricycles that can be used to explore the lake.

Sarangan Lake has several important annual event calendars, namely the offerings on Pon Pon Friday Ruwah, mid-year school holidays, Ledug Sura 1 Muharram, and fireworks on the turn of the year.

The local district government is making a penetrating road project that connects Sarangan Lake with the tourism object of Grojogan Sewu Waterfall, Tawangmangu in Karanganyar Regency. The widening road construction and widening project that connects the two regions is expected to be completed in 2007.

This tourism object can be reached from the City of Magetan; and the location is not far from Grojogan Sewu Waterfall, Tawangmangu (Karanganyar Regency, Central Java).

Magetan Regency Government also wants to develop Poncol Reservoir (about 10 kilometers south of Sarangan Lake) as an alternative tourism object.
