South Korea picks up 2 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals on first day of 2018 Asian Games

The biggest sporting event in Asia swung into action on Sunday in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.
South Korea,... which is looking to finish second in the final standings,... grabbed almost a dozen medals on day one of the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday,... including finishing top of the podium twice in taekwondo.

South Korea won two golds, three silver and six bronze medals on Sunday.
Taekwondo poomsae practitioners delivered both of South Korea's gold medals,… plus one silver and one bronze, to get the ball rolling in Jakarta.
Poomsae requires taekwondo practitioners to demonstrate the attacking and defensive moves of the Korean martial art.
With nearly one-thousand spectators, including Indonesian President Joko Widodo and South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon packed into the Jakarta Convention Center Plenary Hall,… South Korea's gold medal run started with Kang Min-sung, who topped the men's individual poomsae after beating his Iranian opponent by zero-point-zero-eight points.
South Korea snagged its second gold medal in the men's team poomsae event.
The sporting event is making its debut at these Asian Games,… and South Korea, the birthplace of Taekwondo, was expected to sweep all four golds up for grabs, but it wasn't to be.
In fencing, South Korea picked up one silver and two bronze medals.
Park Sang-young captured silver in the men's individual epee on Sunday,... while suffering pain in both his legs.
Park, currently ranked world number 3 and the reigning Olympic champion,… fell to the eighth-ranked ( ) Dmitriy Alexanin of Kazakhstan.
With the defeat,... South Korea missed out on a chance to become the first nation to win the men's individual epee gold in three straight Asian Games.
Another silver medal was won in Palembang, the co-host city some four-hundred kilometers northwest of Jakarta, where Lee Dae-myung and Kim Min-jung finished second in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event,... falling only a few points behind the Chinese team.
Making its Asian Games debut on Sunday,... the unified Korean men's rowing team finished last in its qualification group.
Two athletes from the South and the North finished fourth among four teams in the lightweight men's 4 competition.
The Koreas have assembled two more joint teams in rowing,… lightweight men's 8 and women's double sculls.
Elsewhere, they are competing under one flag in women's basketball and dragon boat racing.
