Genoa Bridge Collapse: what we know so far

  • hace 6 años
AT LEAST 22 people - including a baby - died today after a major tourist motorway bridge collapsed during a "violent" lightning storm in Italy.

Firefighters say cars and trucks plunged more than 150ft after a section of the A10 suddenly fell onto houses and offices below.

Photographs show a huge section of the A10 near Genoa has broken away sparking fears others could be trapped in the rubble 50ft below.

A 100-metre long section of the bridge collapsed and it's feared "several cars" may have been on the stretch when both carriageways collapsed.

Rescue dog and sonar teams have joined emergency crews at the scene of the collapse on the busy Morandi bridge near the city's airport.

Italian television showed images of the collapsed bridge, which was built on the A10 toll motorway in the 1960s. Restructuring work on the bridge was carried out in 2016.

Huge tailbacks have been reported in all directions.
