President Tayyip Erdogan told Turks on Friday to exchange their gold and dollars into lira.
The lira plummeted after US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on metals imports.
The lira has also been falling due to worries about Erdogan's influence over monetary policy.
The lira dove as much as 18 percent at one point on Friday.
Turkey’s trade ministry said the U.S. tariff moves were against World Trade Organization rules.
