Greece to demolish thousands of illegal buildings following deadly wildfire
  • 6 years ago
Greece's Prime Minister says thousands of illegal buildings will be destroyed after a deadly wildfire was said to have been made worse by illegal construction.
Alexis Tsipras said Tuesday that demolition work will start immediately in the Attica region, which includes Athens.
Experts say the illegal and poorly-built buildings made the fire in Mati even worse and created an unescapable maze, leaving residents trapped.
More than 90 people died in what has been described as Greece's worst wildfire.
Tsipras' government is also facing public backlash for its slow response to the deadly blaze.
