Poll Indicates Over 75% Of Americans Would Not Support A 'Socialist' Candidate

A new poll indicates 76% of Americans would not support a "socialist" candidate.

Since the stunning primary defeat of New York Congressman Joe Crowley at the hands of the 28-year-old political newcomer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, there's been a lot of chatter about "socialist" candidates.
Vox noted after Ocasio-Cortez's win last month: "What makes Crowley's defeat so striking is not just that he lost to a young progressive. He also lost to a member of the Democratic Socialists of America."
While many are asking if that association translates into voter support on a larger scale, a Hill.TV/HarrisX American Barometer poll that was conducted July 21-22 and involved 1,001 American voters suggests otherwise.
In the poll, "an overwhelming majority of respondents, 76 percent, said they would not vote for a 'socialist' political candidate, while only 24 percent of those polled said they would vote for a socialist candidate," notes The Hill.
The publication adds that "Ocasio-Cortez is one of several candidates running for office this year that labels themselves as a socialist."
The rise of such candidates spurred a spirited debate on 'The View' show Tuesday.
When two of the hosts expressed support for those candidates, Meghan McCain fired back: "I hope Democrats do run as Democratic socialist because I think you'll lose spectacularly. And then I will look forward to election night when I'll finally get to tell everybody I told you so."
