According to CNN, foodborne illness hits one in six Americans every year. The CDC estimates that around 48 million people get sick due to one or another of 31 pathogens. About 128,000 people end up in the hospital and 3,000 die annually. Preliminary data from the most recent CDC FoodNet report hints that some forms are on the rise. Outbreaks are also influenced by seasonal and environmental factors. There are more outbreaks of foodborne illness reported in the warmer summer months.
