Moon apologizes for not keeping minimum wage election pledge

문 대통령 "2020년까지 최저임금 1만원 목표는 사실상 어려워져"

President Moon apologized for not being able to keep his election pledge of raising the nation's minimum wage to around 9 dollars... by the year 2020.
This comes after the government's announcement of a less-than-expected... 10-point-9 percent pay hike for next year.
Arirang's chief Cheongwadae correspondent Moon Connyoung has our top story.
"It's apparently become difficult to achieve the goal of raising the minimum wage to 10,000 won by 2020.
I apologize that I have consequently failed to keep my election pledge."

South Korean President Moon Jae-in opened his first meeting with top aides since getting back from his overseas tour... with an apology for failing to deliver one of his key pledges in the 2017 presidential election.

The president's remarks come on the heels of an announcement made by a council of representatives from the government, labor, and management over the weekend that it had reached to a decision to raise next year's minimum wage to 8-thousand-3-hundred-and-50 won - roughly 7 dollars and 40 cents - an hour.
That's a 10-point-9 percent increase from the current 6-67.

It may not be by year 2020, but the government will do its utmost to raise the nation's minimum wage threshold to 10-thousand won, or 8 dollars and 86 cents at the earliest date possible, the
president said... noting the Minimum Wage Commission's double-digit wage raise decision in 2019 following a whopping 16-point-4 percent increase this year, the biggest rise in two decades.

"The purpose of the rapid minimum wage hike is to guarantee a decent living to low-income earners by raising their income while creating a virtuous cycle of economic growth and job creation by expanding household income and boosting consumption."

"As it is key for the economy to cope with the minimum wage hikes made this year and next, the South Korean president urged cooperation from all sides - the labor, the businesses and the government - especially to ensure small and medium sized businesses remain insulated from any negative impact.
