Scientists in Australia have cracked the genetic code of koala bears - a breakthrough that should ensure the survival of the iconic cuddly critters.

The Sydney-based research team has mapped the koala genome with 95.1 per cent accuracy.

The huge breakthrough is considered to be the most complete marsupial genome sequenced yet and is on par with the human genome.
