US May Not Meet Deadline to Reunite Migrant Families The Trump administration is requesting more time to reunite the families that it separated at the border. Court documents reveal that officials are struggling to match some children with parents arrested at the border. The request comes a day after assurances from Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. Speaking with reporters, Azar said the administration would reunite all children that had been separated. Nearly 3,000 children have been separated from their parents. A federal court has ordered the administration to return all children under 5 to their parents by July 10.
All other children were ordered returned by July 26. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw said he may extend his deadlines in extreme cases.
But he ruled the government must push ahead to reunite the nearly 3,000 children covered by his previous order. In addition, he said the government must establish a system that can be used in future cases.
