'Historic' Rainfall in Western Japan Causes River Flooding and Prompts Evacuation Orders

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate in Kyoto and Osaka prefectures on Thursday, July 5, due to increased risks of floods and mudslides as heavy rain continued to batter western Japan.The Japan Meteorological Agency called the rainfall “historic” and warned it could continue through Sunday, July 8, in the Kinki region, which includes Kyoto, Hyogo and Osaka prefectures, causing more river flooding and landslides.At least two people were killed, while several more were missing, NHK national television said.A bridge across the Katsura River and the riverside promenade of the Kamo River, both famous tourist spots in Kyoto, were closed.The video, which shows the high water level at the Katsura River, was shared online on Friday morning, June 6.Typhoon Prapiroon entered the Sea of Japan days earlier before downgraded to an extra-tropical cyclone.
