The annual Macy's fireworks show, known as the largest pyrotechnic show in the country, lit up the picturesque East River during this year's Fourth of July celebrations.

This video from Long Island City, Queens, shows the spectacular fireworks display capturing watchers with stunning shapes of pinwheels, swirling fountains and pulsing hearts. One Macy's representative told local media that this year's show was one of the biggest yet with over 75,000 shells and seven barges over a mile long producing 3,000 effects a minute.

Big cities and small towns across America celebrated the historical day, marking 242 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
