Bengaluru Govt committee dividing city into 5 municipal corporations
  • 6 years ago
Even as the it city of Bengaluru is struggling with potholes, a govt committee has recommended dividing the city into 5 municipal corporations. The committee visited Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai to study the functioning of the corporations with single or multiple units. If this works out, each of the five corporations may have two zones and 35-45 wards. This has raised several questions on whether such a move will help or create imbalance where some corporation will be cash rich while others, especially in outer areas which will end up being cash strapped. Other concerns include – if the Govt can keep tabs on 5 different bodies even as it struggles to manage one right now. Other issue is that of the sentiments involved -- it is believed that Kempe Gowda was the founder of the city and certain communities don’t want to be divided. Govt has assured the report will be studied before any call is taken.
