Facebook Drops Plans For Massive Internet Drones.
The company’s Aquila project was an effort to build solar-powered, passenger jet-sized drones. The drones were meant to wirelessly connect parts of the developing world to the internet. Facebook’s Director of Engineering Yael Maguire wrote the company will instead focus on the “underlying technologies” behind Aquila.
The project was reportedly experiencing significant internal turmoil.
But Facebook plans on continuing with Aquila by partnering with other companies like Airbus.
However, the company will no longer be building its own drones.
At least 16 people involved with Aquila have been laid off.
