2018 지방선거 및 재보궐선거, 개표 진행

A couple of hours have passed since the polling stations closed…The vote counting is well underway… And to fill us in on the counting procedure… we connect to our Seo Bo-bin at one of the counting stations.
Bo-bin, how is the counting going?

Good evening, Daniel.
I'm here at the Seoul National University gymnasium in Gwanak-gu district and it's been about two hours since the polling station closed at 6 p.m.
Behind me are some 700 volunteers who are helping with the vote counting. Hopefully by 10 p.m we should be able to see some results taking shape.

Just to give a brief recap for this year's election, candidates have competed for more than 4-thousand local administrative, legislative, and educational posts. This also includes 17 metropolitan mayor and provincial governor posts.
The election has added meaning… because it's the first election under the Moon Jae-in administration. Means it could serve as an indicator of the public's sentiment towards the liberal leader's young administration.

As for the ballot counting process, it does involve multiple verification processes to ensure a fair election.
Just like many other counting stations… citizens are allowed to oversee the counting procedure up close to ensure integrity and transparency during the process. The ballot counting area, located just a floor below where I'm standing… is under strict control… as only the vote counters are allowed to go in. In case of any emergency… police officers are on full standby, right outside the counting station.
And as for the ballot counting process… Nationwide there are 254 centers helping to count the votes with machines that help classify the ballots by candidate and party and then the ballots are counted again by election workers.
The National Election Commission is also providing the counting process online, by real-time as well. Everyone in and around the site seems to be prepared for a long-haul tonight. Daniel?
