Rick and Morty: Justin Roiland's Rise to Fame

‘Rick and Morty’ Season 3 is just around the corner, so get schwifty with Dev Allen as he takes us through the remarkable rise to fame of Justin Roiland.

Would you believe that the history of Rick and Morty begins with a reality show hosted by Ryan Seacrest? Justin Roiland started out as a P.A. on the show, but at night he worked on cartoons that would be the origin of ‘Rick and Morty.’ Voices, writing, animation… Roiland and his friends had formed their own little animation studio, but they needed a platform. That’s where Channel 101 and Dan Harmon play their part in the development of ‘Rick and Morty.’

The failure of Dan Harmon pilot, ‘Heat Vision and Jack,’ inspired him to create Channel 101. It was a breeding ground for strange ideas and new talent, including maybe the most famous alumni of Channel 101: Justin Roiland. ‘House of Cosbys’ was Roiland’s first real hit, but the resulting legal kerfuffle is what inspired him to create ‘Rick and Morty.’ ‘Doc and Mharti’ was a pornographic vandalization of ‘Back to the Future,’ it’s ugly and shocking but also hilarious, and was a big hit at Channel 101. ‘Doc and Mharti’ was too blatant of a ripoff for network TV, but the ‘Rick and Morty’ characters were basically right there.

When Adult Swim asked him for a new show with a prime-time feel, only one name came to the mind of Dan Harmon: Justin Roiland. ‘Rick and Morty’ was born, and soon the show became a phenomenon. It opened up a new world of possibilities for Justin Roiland: VR games from his own studio, Squanchtendo, comics, toys and more. The sky's the limit for ‘Rick and Morty’ creator Justin Roiland, and it all started with a dream and a dumb reality show.
