Pure Grenada Spicemas Carnival-Traditional Mas-Vieux Corps,Victoria St.Marks

Vieux Corps is also known as the mas of disguise. The Vieux Corps mas dates as far back as the pre-emancipation era and is indigenous to Grenada. The name of the mas is indicative of Grenada’s strong French ancestry, having been a French colony.
The masquerade is concealed by a mask made from wire mesh. This disguise signifies the loss of identity and status endured by the slaves brought to Grenada from West Africa during slavery.
Along with the mask, the Vieux Corps costume comprises a tall conical, hooded hat and a long flowing gown with matching collar. Traditionally, the gown was made of crocus bag material or black cotton fabric. In more recent times, the head pieces, colours of the costumes and the paintings at the front tend are dependent on the portrayal of the band. Heavy clogs made from wood are worn on the feet.
The masqueraders are mostly silent except for the music made by stumping of the clogs in a rhythmic fashion with accompaniment by the objects dragged along with the ground with the chain.
