GEORGIA — A police officer in Georgia was fired after body camera footage showed he used his patrol car to strike a man, reports The New York Times.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said the officers were on patrol on Friday around 7:30 p.m. when they saw Timmy Patmon, who they claim was wanted on a felony probation warrant.

The officers said they attempted to confront Patmon, with one of the officers chasing him on foot and Officer Saulters chasing him in the police vehicle.

In a video posted by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Patmon moves in front of the vehicle while Officer Saulters continues to drive and strikes him.

The police claim that Officer Saulters was attempting to block Patmon's path as he tried to flee.

An internal investigation by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department found Officer Saulters used too much force when he struck Patmon.

A police spokesperson said that the crash is being investigated by Georgia State Patrol and added that Patmon suffered from scrapes and bruises and had been taken to a hospital.
