The problem if ageism is worldwide, says Butler.

Question: How does America treat its elderly compared to the rest of the world?
Robert Butler: The problem of ageism is worldwide. It is not exclusively in America, but we do have stronger sense of social protection in most of Europe than we do in the United States. Unfortunately, we just haven’t gotten there. We have social security, but it is very modest in the way of financial, actual financial provision and we don’t have quite as generous a system as we do in all of Western Europe and Japan.
