Saudi Arabia issues first driving licenses to 10 women ahead of ban lift
  • 6 years ago
Saudi Arabia issued its first driving licenses to ten women on Monday, just weeks before a ban on female driving is lifted.
They swapped their foreign licenses with domestic ones and about two thousand other women are expected to do the same next week.
The move came amid some doubt the kingdom would go ahead with the lifting of the ban following a government crackdown on women activists who advocated their right to drive.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been pushing for more open policies towards women to reshape Saudi Arabia ultra-conservative image.
