Guatemala Volcano Eruption Kills 62 People The Fuego Volcano erupted on Sunday, spewing a river of lava and smoke 6 miles into the air, according to CONRED, the government agency for disaster reduction. Head of Guatemala's National Forensic Sciences Institute reports 62 dead. Only 13 of the bodies have been identified. Volcanic ash has spread across a 12-mile radius, and wind could carry the cloud further. According to CONRED, 1.7 million have been affected by the eruption and more than 3,100 people have evacuated. 15 people, including 12 children, have been hospitalized for severe burns. Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has declared three days of national mourning.
