A design student has invented speakers made out of MUSHROOMS - and says they work best for jazz. Bertie Ford, 22, described himself as a "fun-guy" as he created the casings of his FungiSound from a material made of mushrooms roots called mycelium. The incredible natural product can be grown into any mould and has been used as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic food packaging. Bertie, a Product Design student at Nottingham Trent University, said his innovative final year project had created sounds never heard before but works best for soft tones such as jazz music. "It's the first mushroom-made loudspeaker - and it works best for jazz because it has a fungi sound," he said. "It's the way the sounds bounce of it - the actual tone of the fungi is a nice sound. "Mycelium is the largest living organism on Earth, but few people realise its potential as a sustainable material. "I enjoyed creating it, it's nice growing stuff and doing it as a project instead of going down the design and engineering route. "Fungi is this weird creepy thing that people turn their noses up but it's the decomposer of the world."
