Expert's take on Trump's North Korea summit cancellation, Punggye-ri test site demolition
  • 6 years ago
Let's get some perspective from the U.S. on the big North Korea stories of the day -- President Trump's cancelation of the North Korea-U.S. summit, Pyongyang's reaction and the regime's demolition of its nuclear test site.
I'm joined on Skype by Henry (SO-COLL-SKI) Sokolski,... Executive Director for the Washington-based Nonproliferation Policy Education Center.
I'd like to start by asking your reaction to President Trump's decision to pull the plug on the summit with Kim Jong-un...
and whether you think it was the right move?

North Korea has responded within the past couple of hours. As we reported at the top of this newscast,... it was a surprisingly gentle and measured response... and it came quickly by the North's standards. Does the lack of the usual heated bellicose rhetoric surprise you? Seems to suggest Trump has the upperhand now....

Let's turn to the North's demolition of its Punggye-ri nuclear test site. Kim Jong-un said in April that the regime had completed its quest for nuclear weapons... do you think Pyongyang is *really at the point where it doesn't need to test any more nuclear devices?

Would it be possible for the regime to carry on testing nuclear bombs without the rest of the world knowing... or is that impossible due to the seismic readings, etc...?

We appreciate your insights. That was Henry (SO-COLL-SKI) Sokolski,... Executive Director for the Washington-based Nonproliferation Policy Education Center on the cancelation of the North Korea-U.S. summit and the demolition of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.
