Maddie Poppe Crowned 'American Idol' Winner in Debut Season on ABC Poppe,19, is the 16th winner of ‘American Idol’. I don’t have any words to describe this really. I can’t believe people believed in me this much just to make it to the top two with Caleb [Lee Hutchinson]. To actually have been named the winner of this show is incredible. Not only did Poppe beat runner-up Hutchinson, the pair also revealed they are dating! Well, Maddie is my pal and I’ve known her since the beginning of Hollywood week. And she actually happens to be my girlfriend. The pair then sang a duet of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, holding hands at toward the end of the song. Hutchinson also took to Twitter after the show to show support for Poppe.
