Public DNA Databases Are Now Crawling With Police

After the arrest of the Golden State Killer suspect last month, police and genealogists didn’t waste any time accessing public DNA databases. Now a forensics company announced they will perform this analysis en masse, and the DNA database GEDmatch will allow police usage of their database. GEDmatch takes samples provided by police and processes the DNA much like 23andMe and Ancestry do. The results are then shared in the database, which is popular among people studying their family tree.
