Edward is a little blue engine and is one of the first engines to work on the Island of Sodor. One day, Edward notices the other engines getting ready for work and aside from Thomas, the other engines were bigger than Edward and boasted about it. This makes Edward sad until the Driver and Fireman felt sorry for him and they decide to take him out for a run. Edward worked hard all day, the coaches thought he was very kind and the driver was so proud and pleased that he decided to take Edward out again the next day. The other engines were cross but Edward was so tired and happy that he falls asleep at once. Next morning, Edward wakes up to find nothing had changed as Gordon was still boasting. He tells Edward to look out for him in the afternoon as hell rush through with the express and thatll show him what a splendid sight he is. Edward spends the morning shunting, he enjoys shunting the cars as he comes up quietly and gives them a push and then he would stop and the silly freight cars would bump into each other. Edward shunts every freight car in the yard, then he stops for a rest. Presently, he hears a whistle, it was Gordon and instead of pulling shiny coaches, he was pulling a very dirty freight train! Edward laughs and continues shunting. Later, theres trouble, Gordon stalls on a hill and Edward is ordered to push him and his train over the top of the hill. They find Gordon halfway up and crosser still, his driver and fireman say that Gordon isnt trying hard enough but Gordon says its the freight cars holding him back. Edwards driver comes up and explains that theyll give the train a push but Gordon thinks itll never work. They bring the train back to the bottom of the hill, Edward couples up and the two engines set off, pulling and pushing as hard as they could. The engines strain up the hill and almost before he realized it, Gordon found himself at the top of the hill and he takes off speeding down the hill and through the next station on his own. He forgot about Edward and didnt say thank you as he left Edward far behind. But Edward was happy because he proved to be so helpful and really useful. At Maron station, Edward then learns that his driver and fireman are very pleased with him. The fireman gives him a nice long drink the Driver promises him a new coat of paint, then Edward would be the smartest engine in the shed!
