Lava Flows Through Hookupu Street Fissure
  • 6 years ago
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano showed no signs of ending a week-long eruption on Thursday, May 17, as three fissures on the Lower East Rift Zone reactivated and a new fissure – the 21st – opened between two of the earliest ones.Kris Burmeister initially went to Hookupu Street to document the lava flow that had stopped in the Leilani Estates. Upon arrival he realized that the lava flow had only stalled temporarily. He filmed for about an hour before he felt it was best to evacuate the area given that there is only one road to escape that part of the area. The US Geological Survey said a 22nd fissure opened on Friday.
