Dallas Cowboys Rookie Mini-Camp Kicks Off

FRISCO, TEXAS – Dallas Cowboys rookie mini-camp kicked off today at the Star in Frisco. Rookies underwent conditioning drills in groups based on positions. The fight for a starting position on “America’s Team” has begun. There were two practices today on the outdoor field, an open locker-room sandwiched between the two, and a press conference concluding the day’s events.
At the press conference head coach Jason Garrett remarked on the process in the drills today “ getting players integrated to the program. Getting them acquainted with our scheme. More teaching and we will continue to accelerate next week with the veterans. “ The Cowboys’ goal is to slow things down with the rookies and work on fundamentals to help the guys in the transition to the ‘silver and blue.’
Instead of running several catching drills with the receivers, they ran routes to emphasize the importance of the foundation of the game. Doing what they are familiar with, will make the players at ease through the transition as they complete these tasks to new schemes as they learn the playbook.
Garrett commented on the excitement of defensive backs coach Kris Richard. The Seattle Seahawks have had a dominant defense in the league for the past 7-8 years and Garrett stated, “ He played a big part of that. He is well respected. He has a similar DNA and will make an impact on the team. “ Veteran players Jeff Heath and Byron Jones have talked highly of coach Richard and the complete trust they have in him. Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch choked up today at the press conference in a discussion over defensive coordinator, Rod Marinelli. The importance of coaches in the development of a rookie is essential, and the excitement for this season with their new coaches is written across these veterans’ and rookies’ faces.
With the leadership of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten out of the picture, players have the opportunity to come in and fight for a starting position and earn the star. Garrett ended the conference by concluding “ It does not matter where you came from. What matters is what you do now!” Every rookie at the camp has the ability to make history with the Cowboys and one day line the walls of the Star with their own highlights and significant plays. There is a void that needs to be filled. A player just needs to have the right heart, drive, and commitment to be an instant impact player.
