U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo heading to Pyongyang: Trump
  • 6 years ago
Our top story this morning.
America's top diplomat is on his second surprise visit to North Korea,... at a time when eyes are fixed on when and where the leaders of Pyongyang and Washington will sit down for their historic summit.
Let's get straight into the details with our Kim Hyo-sun,... who joins us on the line.
Hyo-sun,... President Trump made this announcement during his statement withdrawing the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal...

That's right, Se-min.
During his highly-anticipated Iran deal announcement at the White House on Tuesday,... U.S. President Donald Trump caught everyone off guard,... mentioning that his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was heading to the North Korean capital for a surprise visit.

"Secretary Pompeo is right now going to North Korea. He will be there very shortly, in the matter of, virtual, probably an hour. He's got meetings set up."

Considering the time of the announcement, Pompeo should have arrived in Pyongyang by now.
While no details have been released on whom Pompeo is scheduled to meet,... the top U.S. diplomat's second visit to the North in just over a month could signal that new progress has been made regarding the first-ever summit between the leaders of the two countries.
Indeed, it looks likely that the date and location of the Pyongyang-Washington summit will be announced soon.

"We have our meeting scheduled. We have our meeting set. The location is picked. The time and date, everything is picked. And we look forward to have a great success. We think relationships are building with North Korea. We'll see how it all works out. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But it can be a great thing for North Korea, South Korea, Japan and the entire world. We hope it all works out."

When asked whether the three U.S. detainees in North Korea would be released,... Trump said related news would come soon,... adding that it would be a great thing if they come home.
Meanwhile, Pompeo reportedly told reporters while heading to Pyongyang that he had not received a commitment from the regime that it will release the American detainees during his visit.
Pompeo also explained that he will bring up the issue of the Americans imprisoned in the North,... adding that he hopes that Pyongyang would (quote) "do the right thing."
He also said he hopes to finalize the agenda for the scheduled North Korea-U.S. summit.
Back to you, Se-min.
