Former first lady Michelle Obama has joked that her husband becoming president “didn’t end racism.”
Former first lady Michelle Obama joked on Saturday that her husband becoming president "didn't end racism."
She made the comment during the 2018 United State of Women Summit where she dismissed calls for her to run for office.
"Change starts close to home...So looking for the next person to run...that's been our distraction. 'We're just going to wait for the next person to save us.' We thought it was Barack Obama and he didn't end racism, so I don't know. What do we do now," Obama said.
"It's like, I voted for the black man and we're still living in racism," she continued to joke.
"We've got a lot of work to do before we're focused on the who. Because we're the who," Obama noted. "We're the answer to our own problems and its not finding the one great person to save us from ourselves. It's us."
Many on social media began lobbying for the former first lady to run for president soon after Donald Trump won the election in 2016.
However, she has consistently denied being interested in the position. This past March, she told an audience, "As an older leader I think an important part of leadership is stepping out of the way and making room."
She also said about her ongoing work with young leaders, "This is why I'm not going to run for president. Because I think it's a better investment to invest in creating thousands of mes."
