J.J. Barnes - On Top Of The World

"On Top Of The World" is probably the best of all the twenty odd recordings I made with J.J. Barnes for Motorcity Records. A joyous piece of classic soul with an attitude and optimism which epitomises everything I could ever want to cram into one three minute single. I wrote the song with Junior Giscombe, and J.J. recorded it in 1991. I love it now more than ever. We shot the video in Morecambe while he was appearing at the Togetherness Soul Weekender, at the same time as we also shot the video for "Talk Of The Grapevine" in 2002. J.J. reigns supreme, and, although while at Motown, he always lived in Marvin Gaye's footsteps, now nobody can hold a candle to him. He still sings as wonderfully as he did when he was twenty years old. J.J. Barnes, the singer who I wrote about at fifteen years old, proclaiming him to be the greatest soul singer in the world.
