A large blaze lights up downtown Sao Paulo after a 26-storey block of flats caught fire and collapsed late in the night.

Footage from Tuesday (May 1) shows the scene as the inferno illuminates surrounding buildings in the Brazilian city.

More than 150 firefighters are battling the blaze, which caused the building to crumble around 2:30 local time (5:30 GMT).

The building, formerly occupied by the federal police force, was believed to contain at least 50 squatter families.

One person is known to have died.
