We take a closer look at the new Ford S-MAX 2014.

Ford has a habit of designing practical and rather handsome family cars, and right here we have the latest one: the new Ford S-MAX.
Although still instantly recognisable, this second-generation model has certainly matured over the first S-MAX, which was launched way back in 2006.
It's marginally lower, with sharp edges, a chiseled bonnet and swept-back headlights. All of these features are trademark Ford design cues and all help the S-MAX fit in with Ford's other models such as the Fiesta and Focus.
We already had a pretty good idea of how the car would look thanks to the Vignale concept earlier this year, and wisely Ford has stayed true to that original design.
Viewed in profile, that sweeping roofline helps mask its large size.
There are also big changes inside, too. There's a more premium feel than there was before, and that's partly down to the plush materials and this new free-flowing centre console. The dash has also been cleaned up, with fewer buttons than before - more of the car's functions are controlled through this new 8-inch touchscreen system.
Another thing worth a mention is the digital instrument cluster and these contoured front seats also come with a built-in massage function.
The party piece of the S-MAX, however, is the 7-seat arrangement. Each seat is individual, with both the second and third rows of seating being power-operated - that's something that no other MPV currently offers.
We can't show you it working as this is a pre-production model, but with all seven seats folded flat there is 2,000 litres of boot space and with all 7 seats in place there's still a generous 285 litres available.
As for engines, there will be 5 available from launch - two petrol, and three diesels. The more frugal diesels are expected to make up around 80% of orders and all will be 2.0-litre units with 118, 138 and 178 bhp version on offer.
Ford is also claiming 'best in class' efficiency, so expect upwards of 70mpg.
So, when can you buy one? Well, the S-MAX will arrive in showrooms next summer, and while Ford hasn't officially revealed how much it will cost, we can expect prices to start from around £24,000.
