In a tweet Saturday morning, the president attributed a quote to Fox News' "Fox and Friends," writing, "Clapper lied about (fraudulent) Dossier leaks to CNN."
Trump then added about Clapper, "He is a lying machine who now works for Fake News CNN."
The comments were made soon after the release of a House Intelligence Committee report about Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
According to an account of the report by The Federalist, Clapper had denied giving any information from the dossier about Trump to the press, but later "admitted" to doing so.
Clapper, who has served under both Democratic and Republican presidents, has been an outspoken critic of Trump, saying at one point about him, "I really question...his fitness to be — in this office."
