Trump Asks If Special Counsel Investigating Russia Probe Was 'Based On An Illegal Act'

President Trump on Friday floated the idea that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation as "based on an illegal act."

President Trump on Friday questioned the legitimacy of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
"[Former FBI Director] James Comey illegally leaked classified documents to the press in order to generate a Special Council? Therefore, the Special Council was established based on an illegal act? Really, does everybody know what that means?" Trump tweeted.
The president's tweet came hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that "the Justice Department inspector general is now conducting an investigation into classification issues related to the Comey memos."
Comey gave four memos to a friend. They detailed conversations between him and Trump.
In early April, Trump raised the possibility of Mueller's dismissal, not long after the FBI raid targeting his personal attorney Michael Cohen.
The president called the situation a "real disgrace" and said that many have told him it's time for the special counsel to be dismissed, notes the Washington Examiner. When asked, "Why don't you just fire Mueller?" Trump replied, in part, "we'll see what happens. I think it's disgraceful, and so do a lot of other people. This is a pure and simple witch hunt."
