The dogs grab the snake by each end and pull until it snaps in half

A family was saved by their pet dogs who chased a 5ft snake out of their home before tearing it in half playing tug-of-war with the serpent the garden.

The Indian family had been relaxing at home in the southern city of Salem, Tamil Nadu, when the rat snake slithered unnoticed into their house.

Video footage shows the dogs taking it in turns to pick the snake up in the mouths before throwing it up in the air.

Eventually, they both get one end each and jostle for 15 seconds before the snake snaps in half.

The ptyas mucosa, more commonly known as the Oriental rat snake, can grow up to 10ft tall.

After being dismembered, the snake can still be seen slithering around on the floor having been driven outdoors by the dogs.

The southernmost region of India is home to a number of dangerous and venomous snakes, and maybe thankfully for the dogs, this one was not poisonous.

But the rat snake can be very aggressive when protecting its territory and are drawn to farm land and houses in search of mice.
