Do Snakes Need To Drink Water?

Unless you're a tardigrade, you need water to survive and snakes are no exception. Snakes don't lap up water with their tongues though. To drink water, snakes open their mouths and just soak in the H2O. For a while, it was believed that snakes sucked in water through a small hole in their mouths. This method was known as the buccal-pump model. But that theory has been debunked, at least for some snake species. At least four species of snakes use a sponge model.
