Lawmakers Urge FCC To Act On Alleged Illegal 'Stingrays' In US Capital

House Democrats reportedly urged the FCC to take immediate steps to stop the suspected use of phone-tracking devices widely known as "Stingrays." Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security revealed that it suspects "unknown actors of operating cell-site simulators in the DC area. The devices are widely used in the United States by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to locate suspects by their cellphone signals. Gizmodo reports that cell-site simulators can also be used to collect content from cellphone users, including messages and emails sent by phone. The Associated Press reports that four years ago, the FCC formed a task force to address the “Stingray” issue; however, no solutions were generated and the group no longer meets regularly.
