As Ben Taylor says at the start of this video, there’s different ways to count to twenty, and he shows us how by launching into a rhyming ditty that shepherds used to use to count their sheep in Wenslydale, Yorkshire.One was “yan”, twenty was “jigger” and there were plenty of other delightful-sounding words in between.Taylor does his best to preserve this aspect of the West Yorkshire shepherding heritage.He told Storyful: “This particular one is based on sheep scoring verses which were very common and subtly different throughout Yorkshire.”He added: "They’re from a time when folk couldn’t really count. They used the rhyme to get to 20, then would raise a finger for each 20.“If they’d used all their fingers and had more than 200 sheep, they’d put a stone in their pocket to represent 200, and start again!” Credit: Yorkshire Prose via Storyful
