A gunman who has reportedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State shot at a police officer before taking hostages in a supermarket in the south of France.

One person is believed to be dead, according to reports.

The gunman reportedly opened fire at officers before barricading himself inside the Super U supermarket in Trèbes, near Carcassone.

Video shows the situation as anti-terror GIGN police units arrive on the scene.
