Surfer takes on monster wave off Portugal coast

Spanish surfer Axi Muniain rode an enormous wave during a big swell off the coast of Nazare in Portugal.

The footage shows Muniain taking on the towering roller and skirting along underneath it.

The clip was filmed on January 18 but the footage has only now emerged online.

Muniain, 35, is currently one of the top European riders. He has been chasing giant swells around the globe for more than 10 years and has built up a name for himself in Nazaré.

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous for huge waves since Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a then-record in 2011 for the largest wave ever surfed, when he rode a 78-foot wave.
