President Trump is trying to discredit memos said to have been made by fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe about their interactions.
"Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me. I don't believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date. Same with lying James Comey. Can we call them Fake Memos?" Trump tweeted Sunday.
NPR is reporting, based on an inside source, that "McCabe documents corroborate [ex-FBI director James] Comey's account — which could play a key role in Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into obstruction of justice."
McCabe's notes have been turned over to Mueller's team, according to Axios.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday, explaining in a statement that "both the Justice Department inspector general and the FBI office that handles discipline had found 'that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions."
McCabe posted his own statement after the firing.
"This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally," he stated. "It is part of this Administration's ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day."
