Alarmed by the shortage of Officers and other ranks in the Armed Forces, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended 5-year compulsory Military Service for those seeking state or central government jobs. The Committee's report which was tabled in the Parliament stated that the Centre had informed it about the recommendations made by the Defence Ministry to the Department of personnel and training. Currently, there is a shortage of 7,679 Officers and 20,185 Junior Commissioned Officers in Army. 1,434 officers and 14,730 sailors in navy and 146 officers and 15,357 airmen in the Indian Air Force.
