Rex Tillerson’s Farewell Speech Includes Many Thanks, But None For Trump

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave a farewell address on Tuesday that included a great deal of thanks, but none for President Trump.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave a farewell address on Tuesday just hours after news emerged of his firing. His speech included many thanks, but none for President Trump. "I close by thanking all for the privilege of serving beside you for the last 14 months. Importantly to the 300 plus million Americans, thank you for your devotion to a free and open society, to acts of kindness toward one another, to honesty, and the quiet hard work that you do every day to support this government with your tax dollars," Tillerson said. Following months of reported tensions between the two, Trump announced Tillerson's ouster in a Tuesday morning tweet.
"Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" the president wrote on Twitter.
Trump expanded on those remarks later in the day.
'Rex and I...disagreed on things," the president told reporters. "We were not really thinking the same. With Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process. I think it's going to go very well."
