Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean recently offered his take on President Trump's Cabinet. "That's news? The Trump cabinet is mostly a collection of incompetent doofuses," he tweeted on Monday. Dean was reacting to a tweet from Philip Rucker, the Washington Post's White House Bureau Chief, who wrote on Sunday, "Just watched the whole @60Minutes piece on Betsy DeVos. Pretty rough. @LesleyRStahl seemed to know more about the nation's public schools than the education secretary." The segment did include some rather jaw-dropping moments. Among them was the education secretary's reaction to host Lesley Stahl's questions about schools in Michigan. CNN notes that DeVos "was unable to defend her belief that public schools can perform better when funding is diverted to the expansion of public charter schools and private school vouchers."
When asked about how Michigan's public schools are doing, DeVos said, in part, "I don' know." Stahl replied, "The whole state is not doing well."
"Your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better, is not working in Michigan where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here," the CBS host further noted. When asked if she'd actually gone to some of the state's worst-performing schools to assess what the problems may be, DeVos responded, "I have not...I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming."
