RUSSIA — Goal-line technology will be back again at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
Here's a guide of the two goal-line systems that will be used to help referees decide whether a goal has been scored or not.
One system uses several cameras that have been installed high up within the stadium to determine whether the entire ball has crossed the goal line. The magnetic system tracks the receptors in the ball, and the magnetic fields created through underground cables calculate and determine whether a goal has been scored.
The goal-line technology automatically registers the goal and instantly alerts the referee to the fact that the football has crossed the goal line. The technology will be able to prevent shocking decisions from being made, such as the disallowed goal during a match between England and Germany in the 2010 World Cup in Germany.
According to FIFA, the following goal-line tech systems have been approved by FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for use: GoalRef, Hawk-Eye, and GoalControl.
The technology passed its inaugural trial during the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup Japan in December 2012. It has since been used at the 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Euro 2016 in France, 2016 UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals, 2016 Copa America, the English premier league, and the German Bundesliga.
