Meet The First Female Rapper In Afghanistan

This is Afghanistan’s first female rapper. 26-year-old Paradise Sorouri was almost beaten to death by 10 men for fighting for women’s rights and not wearing the Hijab. In 2013, the UN recognized Sorouri for promoting human rights and using her voice to stand up for those who are silenced. Numerous death threats forced her to flee the country, but she returned to Afghanistan after her two cousins, aged 9 and 12, burned themselves alive in protest of being married off to 60-year-old men. Sorouri dedicated a song to their memory called, ‘Nalestan’. Sorouri plans to keep empowering women through her music, and vows to never be silenced by a man.
