These Toy Dolls Were Created to Empower Young Girls of Color
  • 6 years ago
These dolls embrace the beauty of natural hair, and aim to increase positive representation for little black girls everywhere. Mala Bryan started ‘Malaville,’ a line of Afro-Caribbean inspired dolls that have a range of skin tones, and natural hair textures and styles. “It’s nice to be able to create a product where the children can look at it and be like… ‘She’s beautiful, and I want to be like her’” says Bryan. Her mission is to build self-esteem from a young age. The dolls can be shipped around the world, and are on shelves in toy stores in South Africa. “A lot of our racial issues…can be changed just with something as simple as play.”
