Oscar Favorite 'The Shape of Water,'
Accused of Plagiarism The son of the late playwright Paul Zindel filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against director Guillermo del Toro and Fox Searchlight alleging that “The Shape of Water” was “obviously derived" from Zindel's 1969 play "Let Me Hear You Whisper." According to reports, David Zindel is seeking all the profits from the film, and an injunction blocking it from further showings in theaters. Guillermo del Toro has responded to the accusations. “I have never read nor seen the play,” the film’s director and co-writer told Deadline. “I’d never heard of this play before making The Shape of Water, and none of my collaborators ever mentioned the play.” The Shape of Water leads the way in nominations for this year's Oscars. The movie will compete in 13 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.
