The benefits of integrating with the global economy were the key selling points of economic reforms in 1991. Liberalization was premised on the idea that it would make local industry more competitive and turn India into a manufacturing superpower. The team of reformers led by P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh hoped that manufactured products from India would capture world markets, opening up opportunities for millions to shift from farms to factories. This is precisely what happened in many Asian countries including China.
